Non-equivalent vocabulary translation

On September 18, 2021, SUSU Academic Writing Office translator and translation teacher, Anton Volkov, held an online seminar on the topic “Modern non-equivalent vocabulary and methods of its translation”.

The webinar presented the concept and types of non-equivalent vocabulary, development prospects, and features of transmission by means of the target language. Volkov spoke about the current state of the English-speaking and Russian-speaking linguocultures, their exclusivity and inclusivity, the possibility of the transition of non-equivalent vocabulary to the area of lacunae words and further to borrowings (morphologically assimilated or not).

The history and current trends in the translation of non-equivalent vocabulary were discussed separately, associated not only with the emergence of new methods, but also with the departure from the requirements (transcription and transliteration) that existed earlier.
